Don’t Feel Lost When Caring For Your Cat. Follow These Tips!

If you own or are considering owning a cat: congratulations! Animals of the feline persuasion are some of the most amazing companions you can find anywhere. The following article will provide you with expert tips on managing life with your cat and in taking care of him. Read on for fun and helpful information.

Be sure to have your pet cat spayed or neutered by the time it is six months old. A spayed or neutered cat is a more satisfactory pet because it is calmer, quieter and more likely to stay home. Neutered male cats do not spray urine to mark their territory. This is definitely a plus when it comes to cat ownership.

To keep your cat healthy and strengthen its bond with you, always set aside lots of play time. Kittens especially need lots of attention, which you can easily give to them through play. Pull a piece of string around for a fun and gentle way to keep a cat entertained for hours!

If you don’t want your cat to scratch up furniture, try filling a small spray bottle with water and spritzing your cat whenever he tries. Cats generally avoid water altogether for reasons no one is sure about, so he will not like this. Eventually he will stop scratching to avoid getting sprayed.

If your cat has a tendency to eat your plants, you can stop him. You can either purchase bitter apple spray and spray the pot, or you can put a bit of clove oil on a cotton ball and bury it a bit in the soil. Your cat will avoid both.

Who says only dogs can do tricks? Cats are very intelligent and have the ability to learn as well, especially as young kittens. Some people train their cats to play fetch just like dogs do. There are even people who have successfully trained their cat to use a regular toilet, instead of a litter box.

Cats are great pets, but their litter boxes can be unsightly and have an odor. If you can’t stand the sight of your litter box, then it is time to go shopping. There are many different styles of litter boxes on the market. Some are even disguised as fake potted plants. Not only does it look better, it controls the smell as well.

Give serious thought to spaying or neutering your cat. Your vet can give you the pros and cons of both, but if you plan to keep your cat for a long period of time you should consider this operation. Cat overpopulation is a real problem, and you can do your part.

Do not attempt to teach your cat how to use the litter box. This comes naturally – you can’t teach it. Don’t force your cat into the box or you will traumatize them.

If you’ve just met a cat, don’t look at them in their eyes. Cats do not like being stared at by people they don’t know. That’s why they are more comfortable if you are not looking at them. They are more likely to approach you that way, and more likely to kindly regard you in the future.

Where did you put the litter box? Do not hide the box simply to reduce the smell. Make sure that your cat can get to its litter box very easily. A finicky cat may not use the litter box if the environment is very inconvenient. If the litter box is kept on a cement floor, then place a rug or mat underneath it.

Do your best to keep your cat as healthy as possible and take it to the vet regularly. Your cat needs these periodic checks and particular immunizations in order to stay healthy. Your cat will be a part of your home and that means it should be treated as good as you would treat a family member.

Some foods are not permissible to serve to your cat. Examples include garlic, grapes, green tomatoes and onions. These foods will cause indigestion or much worse for your cat. Milk can also end up giving your cat an upset stomach.

Cats can get sick in some of the same ways you can. Because your pet is a family member, you are around them enough to know when they are not feeling very good. If you think something is wrong, visit the vet. They can determine what is wrong and figure out the proper course of care.

Spaying or neutering your cat is a great decision. Cats can be very sneaky. Therefore, even if your cat stays indoors, it will attempt to go outside. Your cats can get pregnant if you let them escape for a short period of time. Lots of cats lose their lives because of overpopulation every year.

Watch your pet carefully for signs of illness. If you see your cat suddenly eating less, drinking more, seeming increasingly lazy or hiding from people that she normally loves, this could be a sign that something is medically wrong. In such cases, visit your veterinarian to get your kitty checked out as soon as possible.

If you are having a holiday party with lots of guests, make sure to ask your guests to leave their small dogs at home. Lots of noise can make a cat feel uncomfortable, but their discomfort will be increased dramatically once they notice that there is a dog inside the home.

Just like humans, cats need exercise to maintain proper health. Of course, you don’t walk cats like you do dogs, and leaving a cat outdoors can shorten it’s lifespan. For an indoor cat, play with it regularly to keep it in shape. Cats like batting and chasing games. Giving the cat something to climb is recommended as well.

Cats are said to be very intuitive and sometimes more helpful as companions than even other humans! If you own one, you already know this! Hopefully this article has given you answers to the questions you have about cats and set you straight on important issues. Enjoy your cat for many years to come.
